Study Guide
There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the unit Use information about children to inform practice. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study.
Vocational Education and Training online courses are another choice that you can make to assist you to further understand this unit.
Each session is accompanied by a set of colour-coded resources. Please review the resources before attending each VOOC. After the VOOC, you should record your thoughts, ideas and suggestions about the session and share them with other learners. We have provided links to blog, forum and sharing tools but you can also use your own methods. VOOCs are not compulsory but they are an opportunity to gather evidence of your learning by participating with others.
Session 1 -Gather information about the child through observation - Blue tiles
This includes:.
- Observing, listening and talking with children for sustained periods of time
- Paying close attention to what the child is saying and doing
- Identifying their interests, ideas, knowledge and skills

- How can educators collect rich meaningful information on children?
- What are the benefits for educators and children when they observe, listen and talk to children for sustained periods of time?
Session 2 - Gather information about the child from secondary sources- Pink tiles
This include- Using child records to collect information about each child
- Collaborating with family and other educators to collect information about each child’s needs, interests, skills and cultural practices
A few points to think about for your blog:
- Why is it beneficial to collaborate with families and other educators when collecting information about children?
- What are the consequence of an educator not referring to a child's record when collecting information about the child?
Session 3 -Record observations appropriately -- Purple tiles
This includes:
- Ensuring information collected through observation and secondary sources is discussed with relevant people and recorded accurately in accordance with service requirements
- Ensuring discussion and recording of information is free from biased comments and negative labelling of children
A few points to think about for your blog:
- Why is it necessary to discuss observations with relevant people?
- Why should ethical consideration be made when discussing and recording information about children?
Session 4 - Use observations and information collected to contribute to program planning - Orange tiles
This includes
- Using information gathered about the child to contribute to the planning of programs that promote children’s learning and development
- Using information gathered about the child to ensure interactions are responsive and respectful of the individual child

- How can the information gathered about the child be used to plan the program?
- How does an effective educator ensure their interactions are responsive and respectful of the individual child?
